Let’s explore economics through a story.
Amina, a girl with dark braids, walked through a bustling market filled with colourful stalls on a hot June day. The delicious aromas of food surrounded her, and she craved some mangoes, especially since it was the annual Mango Festival.
Her excitement turned to disappointment when she reached her favourite fruit seller, Rani, whose cart only had a few wrinkled mangoes. “Rani Aunty, what happened to all the good mangoes?” Amina asked.
Wiping the sweat from her face, Rani sighed, “It was a bad harvest this year, Amina. Not enough mangoes for everyone.”
News spread quickly, and soon a crowd gathered around Rani's stall. As the demand for the few mangoes increased, so did their price. Amina, with her limited allowance, couldn't afford to buy her favourite fruit. Feeling sad, she walked away.
Just then, Ahmed, her classmate known for his bargaining skills, appeared. "Don’t worry, Amina! I have an idea!"
He led her to another vendor, Ramesh, who had some perfect mangoes. Ahmed struck a deal, trading fresh vegetables from Amina’s garden and a basket of homemade biscuits for the mangoes. With their mangoes in hand, Amina and Ahmed returned to the market, savouring the sweet taste as others looked on jealously.
Scarcity: Economics revolves around decision-making when resources are limited. In Amina’s case, there weren't enough mangoes for everyone, creating scarcity. We face similar decisions daily with limited resources.
Demand and Price: As the number of mangoes dwindled, the demand grew, pushing the price higher. This relationship between demand and price plays a crucial role in economics.
Barter: Ahmed's creative solution involved trading goods—vegetables and biscuits—for mangoes. This system of exchange, called barter, existed long before money.
Opportunity Cost: By choosing to trade veggies and cookies, Amina gave up other potential uses for those goods. This concept, known as opportunity cost, highlights the trade-offs involved in every decision.
The principles from Amina’s story also apply to the stock market. When the demand for a stock is high and supply is low, the price rises. Conversely, if more people want to sell a stock than buy it, the price falls—just like with the scarce mangoes.
Economics helps us understand choices, scarcity, and value. It guides decisions about what to buy, save, and trade—just like Ahmed’s smart mango trade! Life, after all, is about making the most of what we have.
Economics is divided into two branches: microeconomics (individual decisions like Amina’s mango purchase) and macroeconomics (the bigger picture). In Chapter 2, we’ll dive into the world of macroeconomics and explore how these ideas affect entire economies!
