Berger Paints India Company background

Founded in: 1923
Managing director: Abhijit Roy

Berger Paints India Ltd, established as Hadfields (India) Ltd on December 17, 1923, is today the second-largest paint company in India. Renowned for its innovative solutions, the company engages in the manufacturing and selling of paints, varnishes, and enamels, catering to both decorative and industrial applications. With a steadfast commitment to providing high-quality and diverse painting solutions, Berger Paints India has earned a stellar reputation in the global market.

Headquartered in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), Berger Paints India boasts an expansive distribution network that includes 184 stock stations and over 60,000 dealers, ensuring its products reach even the remotest regions. The company operates manufacturing facilities in West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Pondicherry, Goa, and Jammu & Kashmir, while also maintaining a strong international presence in Nepal, Bangladesh, Poland, and Russia. These strategic initiatives not only bolster its production capabilities but also position Berger Paints as a dominant player in the global paint industry.

Berger Paints India owes much of its success to its robust technical collaborations. The company has entered into technical license agreements with global leaders such as DuPont Performance Coatings for automotive coatings, Nippon Paint Co. Ltd for next-generation automotive finishes, and Orica Australia Pty. Ltd for protective coatings. It also collaborates with TIGERWERK Lacku. Farbenfabrik GmbH in Austria for specialized powder coatings and Nippon Bee Chemical Co. Ltd for coatings on plastic auto parts and mobile phones. These partnerships allow Berger Paints to stay at the forefront of innovation while addressing the evolving demands of the industry.

The company underwent several transformations before becoming Berger Paints India Ltd in 1983. In 1947, British Paints Holdings acquired the company and renamed it British Paints India Ltd. Subsequent years saw changes in ownership, with the controlling interest passing through organizations like Celanese Corporation (USA) and CELEURO NV (Holland). By 1969, the company’s controlling interest was acquired by Berger, Jenson Nicholson Limited (UK). These transitions marked the beginning of Berger Paints’ journey as a standalone and self-reliant brand in India.

From 1983 onwards, Berger Paints India established itself as a market leader, introducing iconic innovations such as the Color Bank tinting system, which offered consumers a choice of over 5,000 colors delivered in minutes. This groundbreaking system set new benchmarks in the Indian paint industry, enhancing customer experience and operational efficiency.

Berger Paints India has continually expanded its manufacturing capabilities. In 1997, the company commissioned a new paint manufacturing unit in Pondicherry. Two years later, it merged with Rajdoot Paints Ltd, further strengthening its market position. In 2000, the company acquired Jenson Nicholson Nepal Pvt Ltd and rebranded it Berger Jenson Nicholson, Nepal.

During 2001-02, the company ventured into the automotive paints segment by acquiring the Motors Industrial Paints business of ICI India through its subsidiary, Berger Auto Industrial Coatings Limited. In 2005, it established Berger Cyprus in Cyprus to set up a paint manufacturing facility in Russia. This facility began commercial production in 2007, producing alkyd-based and water-based paints.

Another major milestone was the acquisition of Bolix SA, a leading provider of External Insulation Finishing Systems (EIFS) in Poland, in 2008. This acquisition was significant for its diversification into energy-efficient construction solutions.

Berger Paints India has consistently demonstrated a commitment to sustainability and innovation. The company has invested in eco-friendly production methods, including the installation of rooftop solar power plants at multiple facilities and the adoption of bio-briquette-fired thermic fluid heaters in resin plants.

The company’s product portfolio is equally impressive. From launching anti-microbial powder coatings for the healthcare segment to introducing polyester powders for agricultural and construction equipment, Berger Paints has consistently catered to niche markets. The company’s DURABERG range, launched for the architectural segment, showcases its ability to innovate while meeting the growing demand for specialized products.

Berger Paints India has made significant investments in expanding its manufacturing footprint. The establishment of a fully automated manufacturing facility at Sandila Industrial Area in Uttar Pradesh in 2023 is a testament to its growth trajectory. With a focus on integrating water- and solvent-based decorative, industrial, and protective coatings, this facility is expected to play a pivotal role in meeting rising market demands.

Additionally, the company has undertaken multiple brownfield expansions at its Goa, Jammu, Hindupur, and Rishra plants. These expansions include enhancements in water- and solvent-based paint production and resin manufacturing capacities.

The Berger Paints India share price is a reflection of the company’s steady growth and financial stability. As one of the most sought-after stocks in the Indian paint industry, it attracts investors who recognize its potential for long-term profitability. The share price has consistently mirrored the company’s robust performance, buoyed by its strategic expansions, acquisitions, and focus on sustainability.

Berger Paints India’s ability to withstand market challenges, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, has further solidified investor confidence. During the lockdown, the company resumed operations swiftly, leveraging its decentralized manufacturing network to meet demand effectively.

The company’s international ventures have been instrumental in strengthening its market presence. For instance, its joint venture with Nippon Bee Chemical Co. Ltd, Japan, enabled the development of specialized coatings for plastic substrates in the automotive sector. Similarly, its collaboration with Chugoku Marine Paints, Ltd. (Japan) for marine paints has opened new avenues in the industrial segment.

Additionally, Berger Paints India has partnered with NBCC Ltd and Bolix SA to introduce External Thermal Insulation and Composite Systems (ETICS) in India, addressing the growing need for energy-efficient building solutions.

Berger Paints India Ltd has emerged as a trailblazer in the Indian paint industry, combining tradition with innovation. From its humble beginnings as Hadfields (India) Ltd to becoming a global leader, the company’s journey is marked by strategic expansions, sustainable practices, and technological advancements.

The company’s diverse product portfolio, coupled with its extensive distribution network and international collaborations, ensures a strong market presence. Its share price continues to be a barometer of its financial health and growth potential, making Berger Paints India an integral part of the country’s industrial landscape.
